When Can I Sit or Exercise After a BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift)?

Recovery

After a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), it is important to avoid sitting or lying directly on the buttocks for a period of time to allow for proper healing and optimal results. This is because sitting or lying on the buttocks can put pressure on the area and affect the blood flow to the newly transferred fat cells.

The length of time you should avoid sitting after a BBL can vary depending on the specific surgical technique used and your individual healing process. However, most plastic surgeons recommend avoiding sitting or lying on the buttocks for at least three weeks after surgery. During this time, patients may need to use a special cushion or pillow to avoid putting pressure on the area while sitting.

One of our favorites is the Avocado Pool Float from Amazon. It allows inflation with hairdryer or toy air pump. Think of it as a recliner with a hollow space for the buttocks where the avocado seed would be. This allows you to rest for longer periods such as watching TV without having to sit on the BBL pillow provided at your surgery. It is important to check the float for air leaks prior to your surgery so you can get it replaced. It is no fun to settle down to watch your favorite show or take a nap only to find yourself on the floor!

After Three Weeks

After the initial three-week period, patients may gradually begin to sit for short periods of time, but should continue to avoid sitting or lying on the buttocks for extended periods of time for several weeks to ensure optimal healing. Your cosmetic surgeon can provide specific instructions on when and how to resume sitting and other activities after a BBL based on your individual needs and recovery process.

Physical Activity after a BBL

After a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), it is important to allow for proper healing before resuming exercise or other strenuous activities. The length of time you should wait before exercising again can vary depending on the specific surgical technique used and your individual healing process. It is important to follow your plastic surgeon’s specific instructions for when to resume exercise after a BBL.

In general, most cosmetic surgeons recommend that patients wait at least 4 weeks before resuming any mild to moderate strenuous activities, including exercise. During the first few weeks after surgery, it is important to avoid activities that may use up an undue amount of energy, because that energy will be derived from your newly-transferred fat cells, leading to lower fat survival. We have had patients who planned to improve their result by doing a lot of squats, but this is not appropriate, since the energy required for the gluteal muscles to perform squats will come from the fat cells, diminishing fat cell survival.

After the initial 4-6 week period, patients may gradually begin to resume exercise, starting with low-impact activities such as walking or light cycling. Patients should continue to avoid activities that put pressure on the buttocks, such as squats or lunges, for several weeks to allow for optimal healing. Your surgeon can provide specific instructions on when and how to resume exercise after a BBL based on your individual needs and recovery process.
