A question we occasionally get from patients with not enough fat to transfer to the breast or buttocks is whether they can use somebody else’s fat.
The use of someone else’s fat for a fat transfer is not recommended and is generally not performed in cosmetic surgery. Fat transfer, also known as autologous fat transfer, involves the removal of fat from one area of the patient’s body and transferring it to another area to enhance its shape and contour. This is typically done using liposuction to remove fat from areas such as the abdomen, thighs, or hips, and then purifying the fat before injecting it into the desired area.
Using someone else’s fat, also known as allograft fat transfer, is not recommended because it can increase the risk of rejection or infection. When fat is harvested from the patient’s own body, it is a natural substance that integrates seamlessly into the tissue. This reduces the risk of complications and ensures a more natural-looking and feeling result.
Additionally, using someone else’s fat carries a higher risk of disease transmission, as the fat may be contaminated with viruses, bacteria, or other pathogens. This can lead to serious health complications and should be avoided.
In summary, using someone else’s fat for a fat transfer is not recommended and is generally not performed in cosmetic surgery. It is important to consult with your cosmetic surgeon to determine if you are a good candidate for autologous fat transfer and to discuss the potential risks and benefits.
